چکیده

This research has been carried out to investigating of some biological aspects of date mussels, Lithophaga lithophaga distributing in Gulf of Antalya, in February 2015 – January 2016. The samples were used to determine length and live weight frequency distributions (nonlinear regression using the allometric function), size (length, breadth, thickness) – size relationship (linear regression). The length – live weight relationships of L. lithophaga were determined by the general formula W = a x L, where “W” is the live weight in grams, “L” the sizes (length, breadth, thickness) in cm, and "a" and "b" are the constants to be calculated. Length – breadth and length-thickness relationship were determined by log W = log a +b log L. The statistical analysis of “r” and 95% confidence limits of the parameters “a” and “b” were calculated. Mean size and weight of samples was calculated 75.58 ± 17.65 cm, 6.56 ± 5.27 g, respectively. Positive allometry was found for the breadth (B) on length and length on live weight relationship was displayed negative growth. Negative relative growth was recorded in the breadth on length and thickness on length (P<0.001).

Integrating Morphology, Breeding Ground and Mitochondrial COI Gene Analysis for Species Identification of Bellamya lithophaga (Gastropoda: Viviparidae) in China

BACKGROUND Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a zoonotic public health concern that causes human severe eosinophilic meningitis in Southeast Asia and China. As a medically important intermediate host of A. cantonensis, Bellamya lithophaga (Gastropoda: Viviparidae) is often confused with other morphologically similar sibling species of genus Bellamya, such as B. aeruginosa and B. purificata in the p...

Densities of the endolithic bivalve Lithophaga lessepsiana (Vaillant, 1865) in Pocillopora damicornis, Solitary Islands Marine Park, northern NSW, Australia

The Solitary Islands Marine Park is positioned in a transition zone between tropical and temperate regions and consequently supports a range of taxa with different biogeographic affinities. Driven by variable influence of the East Australian Current, there is increasing representation of tropical taxa along a cross-shelf gradient (inshore to offshore). Patterns in the population of the endolith...

Genetics and taxonomy of Chilean smooth-shelled mussels, Mytilus spp. (Bivalvia: Mytilidae).

It has been previously established that native smooth-shelled mussels in southern South America possess close evolutionary affinities with Northern-Hemisphere Mytilus edulis L. 1758 (McDonald et al. (1991) [5]). This result has since been challenged by authors claiming that Chilean mussels should be considered a local subspecies of M. galloprovincialis Lmk. 1819. Moreover, morphological, physio...

Internal bioerosion by macroborers in Pocillopora spp. in the tropical eastern Pacific

Bioerosion of branched corals was assessed in a fringing reef (Playa Blanca) and a patch reef (Gorgonilla) of Gorgona Island in the tropical eastern Pacific. Cylinder-shaped experimental units (EUs), made from branches of Pocillopora spp., were set 50 cm above the sea bottom for 6, 12 and 18 mo in Playa Blanca (4 zones: Back Reef, Reef-Flat Crest, Reef Front and Reef Slope) and the Gorgonilla p...

Development of microsatellite markers for a hard-shelled mussel, Mytilus coruscus, and cross-species transfer.

The Korean mussel Mytilus coruscus, an endemic marine bivalve mollusk, is economically important. Its population is currently decreasing due to overexploitation and invasion of a more competitive species, Mytilus galloprovincialis. In this study, microsatellite markers for M. coruscus were developed using a cost-effective pyrosequencing technique. Among the 33,859 dinucleotide microsatellite se...
